Where my heart wanders
I first visited Ylläs, Finland, in the winter of 2024.
People often ask what made me fall so deeply in love with it.
I never know how to answer.
It wasn’t one thing.
It was everything.
The silence.
The forests.
The snow that seemed to soften the world and calm my mind.
The little log cabins glowing with warm light against the darkness.
The feeling that, for the first time in a very long time I could simply breathe.
Some places are beautiful.
Some places are exciting.
But every and now and then, if you’re lucky, you discover somewhere that quietly whispers,
“you belong here”
For me that place was Ylläs.
It felt like home long before I had any right to call it that.
Back in England, life has always been and wonderfully busy… and sometimes wonderfully exhausting.
Trying to keep everyone else’s world turning often leaves very little time for myself.
Every now and then, when I allow myself to slow down, I lie in bed and think about Ylläs.
I always picture the same thing.
A small log cabin tucked amongst the trees.
Soft white Christmas lights around the porch.
A simple Christmas tree glowing in the window.
A cup of tea beside an open notebook.
Above all, I hear the laughter of my grandsons echoing through the snow while it falls quietly outside.
And a story waiting to be written.
My dream is simple: to wake in that little cabin, open my notebook, and begin writing.
Perhaps one day, I’ll write my stories there.
Perhaps one day I’ll welcome readers from that beautiful little corner of Finland, sharing my stories inspired by kindness, hope, and the extraordinary moments hidden inside ordinary lives- each one carrying the same quiet magic I found there.
Until then…
I’ll keep writing.
One word.
One page.
One chapter.
One book.
One Tuesday evening.
One dream at a time.
Thank you for wandering here with me
